Well, that was an exciting day!
Just 9 cars started for qualifying, in wet and slippery conditions. Sure enough, this let the smaller lighter cars show up well – particular Kevin Flanagan in his Mini who was fastest, followed by Stephen Kelly and Wolfgang in his Midget in third, just ahead of Mark Russells might Morgan.
Jackie Cochrane’s Tiger did not complete the first lap, an errant locknut letting his drive shaft and wheel disappear into the adjoining field.
The rest of the field lined up in the order Derek Kelly (Midget), Billy Patton (Midget), Johnny Flynn (Midget) and Ed Cassidy (MGB).
Race 1 got underway on a dry track, Kevin initially leading the way with his rear end twitching constantly – before the faster cars of Stephen and Mark overtook, they finished in that order, followed by Wolfgang, Johnny, Derek, Billy and Ed. Jackie could not get his car ready in time for Race 1. Stephen took the honours by 1.7 seconds from Mark.
Other close racing was enjoyed by Wolfgang and Johnny, literally for the entire race with some place swopping. Wolfgang was a bold boy on the final lap and final corner in a classic diving inside move pushing Johnny into the kitty-litter to give him the 4th place.
Race 2 followed the format of Race 1 – in the dry, Jackie very much in the running and taking the win, followed by Stephen, Mark and Kevin. Next up, Wolfgang and Johnnie had another race long dice, with Wolfgang 0.3 seconds ahead at the flag.
A great day for reliability, apart from Jackie, all starters finished all races!
Liam Ruth on behalf of the Committee presented the trophies, kindly sponsored by Impact Ireland Metals (Bernard Foley). The Gordon Bennett Shield, awarded by Leinster Motor Club, went to Jackie Cochrane.
