A disappointing field of 7 cars were entered for this sunny Saturday, with only a very brief interlude of some light rain in between.
Qualifying saw a battle between Jackie Cochrane and Stephen Kelly, 2.2 seconds splitting them. Wolfgang, Derek K, Billy P and Ed C made up the numbers in that order.
Race 1 saw Jackie home first from Stephen 1.3 seconds in arrears. Wolfgang was the only other finisher, others having water leaks, half shaft and axle issues.
Race 2 saw a very close final lap, with Stephen Kelly taking it on the line from Jackie by 0.140 seconds! Wolfgang was next followed by Billy and Derek. These three Midgets had a mini tussle for a couple of laps, Billy passing Wolfgang bravely on the inside at the end of the straight. Derek K had gone into the pits to re fit a mislaid plug lead, and came out again just ahead of the other 2 Midgets. Wolfgang was all set for a battle to take back 3rd place – but both Billy and Derek deciding to spin out! They probably won’t do that again!
Onward and upward to the MEC Sprint on the 8th and 9th August, always a good event taking in a double lap of the Internation section of Mondello. Target time for the Midgets is 1:54 set last year by Wolfgang
